Frequently asked questions

How does a wicking bed actually work?

It’s gardening from the bottom up! Unlike traditional pots where water runs out the bottom, a wicking bed features a reservoir at the base. Water "wicks" up through the soil directly to the roots via capillary action. This ensures your plants get exactly the moisture they need, when they need it, while keeping the surface dry to discourage weeds and pests.

Are these systems suitable for small spaces or balconies?

Absolutely - that is exactly what they are designed for! Our Verti Gro systems and WaterUps planters are perfect for urban environments. They allow you to maximize your "growing footprint" by using vertical space or self-contained units that won't leak messy runoff onto your balcony or patio. You can grow a full salad bar in just one square metre.

How often will I actually need to water my plants?

Much less than you’re used to. Because the water is stored in a covered reservoir away from the sun, evaporation is minimal. Depending on the weather and what you’re growing, most of our customers find they only need to top up their reservoirs every 1 to 4 weeks. It’s the perfect "set and forget" solution for busy families or travellers.

Is it difficult to set up a hydroponic or vertical system?

Not at all. We specialize in "plug-and-play" gardening. Our Verti Gro and wicking kits come with simple, tool-free assembly instructions. We’ve selected these specific products because they are user-friendly for beginners while providing the professional-grade results that experienced gardeners love.

Why should I choose these systems over a standard raised garden bed?

Efficiency and health. Standard beds lose a massive amount of water to evaporation and deep drainage. Our systems save up to 80% more water. Additionally, because the water is delivered to the roots, you avoid the fungal issues caused by wet foliage. You get faster growth, higher yields, and a much lower water bill.
